After poll rout, Congress replaces Kamal Nath with OBC leader Patwari as MP Congress chief
As a direct fallout of its drubbing in the assembly elections in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, Congress on Saturday removed Kamal Nath as Madhya Pradesh state president, appointing OBC leader Jitu Patwari as the PCC chief and tribal face Umang Singhar as the legislature party leader in the Hindi heartland state.
In Chhattisgarh, former Union minister Charan Das Mahant will take over as the Leader of Opposition, but Deepak Baij will continue to head the state unit of the party.
The decisions, though not completely unexpected, took many by surprise due to their swiftness following the party’s rout in the recently concluded polls. Though Congress was also humbled in Rajasthan, a decision over an organisational overhaul is expected to take longer, owing to internal differences.
A tenacious OBC leader, Patwari’s appointment as Madhya Pradesh Congress president point towards a generational shift in the state Congress, with the former elbowing out veteran Nath. While Patwari lost the polls this time, he served as MLA twice.
Congress also wanted to a send a signal by appointing Umang Singhar, the party’s tribal face who is also seen as an arch enemy of former CM Digvijaya Singh, as leader of the Congress Legislature Party. He is four-time MLA from Gandhwani. He is nephew of former deputy CM Jamuna Devi, who served twice as LOP.
In Chhattisgarh, Mahant was appointed Speaker of the Chhattisgarh assembly after Congress swept the assembly elections in 2018. He was earlier an MP from Korba constituency. During the 15th Lok Sabha, Mahant was the sole Congress MP from Chhattisgarh.
The 35-member CLP, which convened two days ago, had adopted a resolution authorising Congress president Kharge to appoint its leader.
